Rapid Fire posting! Normandy '08

Hi Folks,
Right, well, Blog has been semi neglected for a bit (apologies), allthough Caren did write up Belize where we went in September '08.
I'm going to go back even further in time to about August '08 , when we went to Normandy in France (site of the D-Day assault on mainland Europe).

I know Caren is allways up for a travel, especially if it means going to France, but, I was somewhat surprised when she was really keen to go check out the modern historical sites in Normandy, France, most famous for it's role in the WW2 D-Day landings (though of course, going back, has played a part in Dozens of wars over thousands of years!).

Anyways, we had a long weekend spare, so hired a car after work on Friday and drove down to Dover (takes about 2.5 hours from our place), cought the Ferry accross the straight and landed in Calais, France...giving us a chance to try out caren's new phone GPS software, which, thankfully seemed to get us there ok :)

Having arrived in Calais (after a DODGY DODGY Chinese buffet in Dover *shudder*) , we hit the road immediately down the coast to Normandy, and Bayeux where we'd be staying.

Quite a lovely drive, through feilds and farmland, though also quite a long drive (about 3.5 hours).

The next day we got up and started checking out some of the Historic sites, including Omaha, Gold and Juno Beaches (the Allied Expeditionary Force labels for local beaches) , which was absolutely interesting and humbling.

Anyways, in the order of keeping it brief, here are some Photo's.

(Gold Beach, site of the incredible "Temporary Harbour" , built in stormy seas by British engineers and under enemy fire in only 3 days to enable the offloading of supplies and war materials fo the invasion...some hulks used as sea breaks and part of the docks are still visible today, 60+ years later)

Anyway, it was a privalege to visit the sites and really think deeply on what our Parents and Grandparents must have gone through in that time.

...of course, Caren also bought a ton of Booze while we were there, so there ya go... ;)
